FreeAgent was established in 2007, and is one of a growing number of UK-based accounting software options. It’s designed with freelancers and very small firms in mind, and is organised in such a way as to offer clear insights into your financial position from a single dashboard. The idea is that you’ll be able to understand what’s going on in your business easily, even without any financial training.
As well as the basics such as invoicing and quoting, FreeAgent also offers solid expense management with a simple receipt scanning app for your smartphone. This means you can snap a receipt while you’re out, and have it logged immediately. If your business carries stock then FreeAgent may be a good choice, offering a simple inventory tracking system. On the other hand if you’re a freelancer working on projects billed by the hour, the platform also includes built-in time tracking tools to help with both accurate invoicing and reporting to clients.
Multi-currency support is also available, plus multi-user access as your business grows - and, crucially, payroll functionality. Support is available by phone or email.
The major drawback with FreeAgent, however, is price. It’s one of the more expensive options on the market, with plans starting at £19 per month - although your first six months are available at £9.50 per month.
